MOVIE STUDY: Southland Tales
Southland Tales. As in Tales from Southern California, but a different California, where Dwayne “The Outcrop” Johnson is an deed shooting star turned fortune-teller, Justin Timberlake is a veteran of Iraq, Sean-William Scott is literally a partner of twins, and Sarah Michelle-Gellar is a porn diva named Krysta Now. “No-one rocks the cock like Krysta Now.” Or so we’re told. You not in the least actually find out her rocking the cock, and she is more than welcome.
But the film doesn’t try and pander to the prototype of audience who thirst for to see a shimmer of tits. Actually, it doesn’t pander to anyone. It is by means of paralytic and away the most conjectural pic to come exposed of Hollywood recently, if you lessen David Lynch.
Initial of all, the skin view of Southland Tales is really chapters four, five and six. Hey if Superstar Wars did it… The senior three chapters are found in the Southland Tales accurate novel, which actually makes more judgement in itself and of the take as a whole, explaining the various theories behind the blear, whereas the shoot itself drops the audience in the midst of a world that is high removed from the entire we live out in.
There is wi-fi liveliness known as Unsettled Karma, a screenplay written while directed the act upon of drugs that foretells the Conclusion Of Days, and some freaky time travelling. So, the total you would expect from the brains behind Donnie Darko.
The mist is a confusion, but an interesting one. Have a share of the separated plot is concerned with the conundrum that is the Soft-cover Of Revelations create in the Bible, and you could notion this as its modern cinematic counterpart. Some view Revelations as a stump study to be solved, containing a cipher to be dissected. Richard Kelly’s fog is tiring to press this, using the drawn romance and the veil’s website to further the story and the contradictory plotlines within, from a to z literally forcing the audience to actively solicit it into public notice, or, as most people did, ambulate out of the cinema.
While this cross-media, story/puzzle element is a confident stir, the coat should stand on its own legs, which, morosely, it does not. It’s weird and wonderful, annoying and infuriating, littered with major performances and godawful ones. It intent no distrust go Darko in becoming a cult pellicle, notably on series online heroes.
We do not subscribe to seeing this pic, but you destitution to see it. It is the way less travelled.
